Music & Lyrics: Vol 8

It's been almost two years since I posted content on this segment, even though I've had this particular song in mind for the longest time.

The first time I heard Gravity by Sara Bareilles (I still struggle to pronounce her surname), it latched on to my melancholic side (I have my moments) and I couldn't help playing it over and over until the lyrics sank in.

And then, I fell deeper in love with it after watching Season 5, Episode 14 of So You Think You Can Dance, when two of my fave dancers in that season, Kayla and Kupono, rendered an emotional contemporary dance piece, which was choreographed by the amazing Mia Michaels. I still get goose bumps anytime I remember it. Oh, how I loved that show!

It's funny how I always imagine myself singing this song on stage at an open mic event, all caught up in my emotions while the audience is entranced by my rendition. Loool. I will most definitely write a blog post about that if it does eventually happen. #WatchThisSpace

Anyway, here are the lyrics. You'll probably connect with them as much as I did. Read beyond the surface of the words, cause they are deep, deep...

VERSE 1:
Something always brings me back to you
It never takes too long
No matter what I say or do
I'll still feel you here 'til the moment I'm gone
You hold me without touch
You keep me without chains
I never wanted anything so much
Than to drown in your love and not feel your rain
CHORUS:
Set me free, leave me be
I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity
Here I am and I stand so tall
Just the way I'm supposed to be
But you're on to me and all over me
VERSE 2:
Oh, you loved me 'cause I'm fragile
And I thought that I was strong
But you touch me for a little while
And all my fragile strength is gone
*REPEAT CHORUS*
BRIDGE - my favorite part
I live here on my knees as I
Try to make you see that you're
Everything I think I need here on the ground
But you're neither friend nor foe though I
Can't seem to let you go
The one thing that I still know is that you're keeping me down
Keeping me, keeping me, keeping me down
You're on to me, you're on to me and all over
Something always brings me back to you
It never takes too long

#rePlayLyrics MashUp: I Like That

The first time I heard this track, I thought it was all about sexuality and yada yada yada which, more often than not, makes me zone out on a song if that's where the lyrics tend towards.
But I liked the chorus, and that was pretty much all I looked forward to anytime the song came on. I mean, it's Janelle Monae guys.

But then, one random day, while it was playing, I realized the bridge had nothing to do with sex per say. So I got curious, googled the lyrics and BAM! I got addicted.
Apparently, it more or less sounds like the story of my life.

Excuse her French by the way, even though sometimes it's needed to pass a point across #JustSayin'

Music & Lyrics: Vol 7

It's been a WHILE since the lyrics of a song overwhelmed me (in a good way), and Naked by Ella Mai happens to be the 'new boo'.
Reason being? It's so me! Sounds exactly like the message I will love to pass across in a song so people will understand me better.

This points more to my 'mushy' side.

Yep, I've got one of those too.
Shocker, I know. Call me Tough-Soft-Cookie.

And no, I don't have any tattoos...yet. Hehe.

Just kidding...or am I? *smirk*

Music & Lyrics: Vol 6

I just realized this is my first post this year on this segment of the blog. Not that I haven't fallen in love with a few new (or old) songs' lyrics since my last post. There is always that one song among a host of many that hits me in the right way.
I guess I finally found it...again.

But with this one, what did it for me was the lyrics in the chorus...and the beat (love love love it!)

And if you're too smart to love me, dumb
If you've seen too much to love me blind

Can I use my hands to cover your eyes?
Just for one night, just for one night?

And if you're too smart to love me, dumb
If she was too cold to leave you kind

Can I use my hands to cover your eyes?
Just for one night, just for one night?

For those who can relate, download here and listen.

P.S: Yes, I am back from 'visiting the Queen'. And yes, I do have a lot to share with you guys.
Just give me a few more days to cool off and get my head back in the work game then I will certainly do the honors as is my usual custom *wink*

Hashtag: Relationship Goals

When I'm high I don't come down
I get angry, baby believe me

But you don't judge me
Cause if you did baby I will judge you too
No, you don't judge me
Cause you see it from the same point of view

Cause I've got issues, but you've got them too
So give them all to me and I'll give mine to you
Bask in the glory of all our problems
Cause we've got the kind of love it takes to solve them

Music & Lyrics: Vol 5

I was introduced to my first Frank Ocean track, Blasted from the Lonny Breaux Pt. 1 mixtape by my 'bigger' bro (as usual) a couple of years ago after which it was on replay for quite a number of days at a stretch on my playlist.

Plus it got me loving up on the in depth meanings of the lyrics on a few of his other singles. Always viewed him as somewhat of a poet since then.

Blasted still happens to be my best Frank hit. Like the saying goes, "You never really forget your first love."

 [Verse 1]
She's the prettiest girl I've ever seen on a skateboard
And I'm just a guy with a couple of open ears for her
She told me every story behind all of her tattoos
She's thinking maybe the next one
Should have something to do with you
To do with me

[Pre-Hook]
Okay well you gotta do mine in color
Cause all of your exes are in black and white

[Verse 2]
She said you should get a rubix cube over your heart
But you say I've already figured it out
Already figured out the love
She want me to get a spaceship tatted inside of my lip
Cause that's what she feel like she on when we
On each other
Loving on each other
Kissing on each other

[Bridge]
Paper to pen, needle to skin
I'm in the chair, and she's over there
Taking these pictures and blowing me kisses
When I ask her to hold my hand
She told me to take that ink like man
Told me take that ink like a man
She told me that

[Hook]
You wanna get blasted, yeah
Cause you know this love is gonna last
And now we getting blasted
Cause I couldn't let you do it by yourself
My feelings go deeper than the ink
It goes deeper, deep in to your soul

You know it...

Music & Lyrics: Vol 4

I am quite the extremist. When I'm emotional, it's at its peak. And then sometimes I'm at the verge of bottling it all inside.
But this song does it for me. Makes me let lose even though it's been years ago since I listened to it. And my friend (for dayssss) rekindled that little flame again by 'reminding' me of it's existence...

That highlighted bit...the harmony and the words? *sigh*
That's what hooks are for anyway...

'The Promise' by Tracy Chapman

If you wait for me
Then I'll come for you
Although I've traveled far
I always hold a place for you in my heart

If you think of me
If you miss me once in awhile
Then I'll return to you
I'll return and fill that space in your heart

If you dream of me
Like I dream of you
In a place that's warm and dark
In a place where I can feel the beating of your heart

I've longed for you
And I have desired
To see your face your smile
To be with you wherever you are

[Hook]
Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
I'll find my way back to you
Please say you'll be waiting

Together again
It would feel so good to be
In your arms
Where all my journeys end
If you can make a promise
If it's one that you can keep
I vow to come for you
If you wait for me

And say you'll hold
A place for me
I in your heart.

Love truly is beautiful. It could be abused, mishandled, torn apart. But it still is...simply beautiful.

#rePlayLyrics MashUp: Rule The World & Hold On (The Break)

Walk Off The Earth is an accapella (with a blend of indie, alternative and reggae rock, folk and ska) sensation of a band.
I still don't get why they are yet to receive the recognition they deserve. Thanks to my 'bigger' bro who always seems to have a way of digging up musical talents off the depths of the internet and 'forcing' me to give them an ear, which always turns out to be both ears at the end.

This is possibly a one-time section in the blog, a combo of the #rePlay series and the Music & Lyrics volume. That's cause I don't just love listening to these two songs, but I also enjoy singing the lyrics especially the choruses. It's not like they are so deep and intense and all of that. Nah. They are subtle but have quite a lot to offer.

Really can't decide which I love the best...or the better in this case.

Rule The World
They say no way, oh, I say I'll rule the world
Ain't afraid of the walls, Imma break 'em down
They stay the same, oh, I'm feeling high as a bird
Ain't afraid of the ground, Imma stay up
I say yeah yeah yeah, they say no no no
They say slow slow slow, I say go go go
They say no way, oh, I say I'll rule the world
I say I'll rule the world...

  Hold On (The Break)
You gotta hold on to what you got, babe
It ain't always greener than the other side, you know
We ain't rich but we're worth alot, babe
I wanna see the world with your hand in mine, you know
Come on, I'll love you like that
It ain't always greener on the other side, you know
Come on, I'll love you like that
I wanna see the world with your hand in mine, you know

Give them a listen here (Rule the World) and here (Hold On-The Break).

If you have an ear for good music, you would thank me later.

The MixTape: GhaGeria II

I have always wanted to get the feel of being a part of a studio session. My sis and I used to joke when we were younger of how we would one day get a duet album produced cause everyone seemed to be going into music at the time. At least we had the voices to probably even get it certified platinum.

My 'school son' recently delved into hip-hop music and has a couple of mix tapes to his name. However, he needed a female voice to feature in the chorus of one of his tracks and well, I got the slot.
Nah, no payments nor incentives necessary. Let's just say I did it as a favor and also for the love of music.
Plus, he kind of scrapped one task off my bucketlist so I guess I do 'owe' him one.

The mix tape collaboration titled Ghageria II which is a combination of the countries, GHAna (Kula) and NiGERIA (KelZ, the school son) dropped on Christmas day, the 25th December, 2015 and I just had to promote it in any little way I could.

Need I add that Kula is really cool to work with as a producer. I was kind of nervous at first but he put me at ease. Plus I am more or less a perfectionist and felt I didn't deliver to the 'T' and yet they both assured me my bit was perfect.

There are so many raw talents in Africa yet to be discovered.
Hopefully someone that reads this post who knows someone who knows someone else who happens to be influential would get a hold of it and give them the break they deserve.

Do give the songs a listen by downloading the album through this link.
Of course I would shamelessly ask that you start off with track 4, Holy Matrimony which of course features my humble self *big grin*

Be nice with your comments on my 'not-so-fabulous' voice.

Music & Lyrics: Vol 3

Honestly, I don't remember what got me singing this song out of the blues recently even though it's been released over a year ago.
But after I did take my time and really listen to it for the first time, I picked up the lyrics and felt Nicki actually made sense and connected well with the words for once. Got me even rapping along feeling all bada** and shiii.
I do miss my tomboy days though. I just couldn't care less about how big my pants and tees were...life was so easy back then. *sigh*

Yo, people will love you and support you when it's beneficial
I'mma forgive, I won't forget but I'mma dead the issue
Soon as you out their little lives that's when they start to miss you
They see you doing good now it's kinda hard to diss you
Yeah, they be sick when they remember all the bad they wished you
Yeah, they be mad when they can't come and live lavish with you

*my best part*
But I sped off in a Benzy
I see the envy when I'm causing a frenzy
So I pop pills for 'em
Cop cribs in the hills on 'em

Music & Lyrics: Vol 2

Sara. Bareilles

(Gravity)

No matter what I say or do
I still feel you here till the moment I'm gone

You hold me without touch
And you keep me without chains

You loved me cause I'm fragile
When I thought that I was strong...but

                                                  <Chorus>

Here I am and I stand, so tall
Just the way I'm supposed be
But you're on to me... all over me

<Hook...gets me EVERYtime>
I live here on my knees as I try to make you see that you're
Everything I think I need here on the ground

Something always brings me back to you...
                                                                                                                   It never takes too long

Music & Lyrics: Vol 1

  Kelly. Clarkson
   (Invincible)

I was running from an empty threat
Of emptiness
I was running from an empty threat
That didn't exist
I was running from an empty threat
Of abandonment
I was running from an empty threat
That didn't exist

Skrillex & Diplo with Justin. Bieber
                                                             (Where are you now?)

I gave you attention when nobody else was paying
I gave you the shirt off my back, what you saying?
To keep you warm
I showed you the game everybody else was playing, that's for sure
And I was on my knees when nobody else was praying, oh Lord...

Just some few lyrics I felt were worthy to share--Justin. I know right?

Shocker!

Platform Shoes and All Things Pop

Gossip Girl Season 04 Episode 07 in the year 2010. (5 solid years ago...Geez. Time has no chill whatsoever)
That's where and when I knew Robyn existed.

And I just had to google her up. No. First I downloaded the song 'Hang with me' which was featured in that episode. Couldn't help myself.
Then, I googled her up.

Just the other day out of sheer boredom I was going back through memory lane on YouTube- GG to be precise. Though it's hard to admit, I do kinda miss all the drama and what-nots of the so-called Upper East Side. Reminds me of when I had nothing to really worry about *urgh*

From link to link I recalled different tracks from the series and Robyn obviously came up.

And I just loved her all over again.
Platform shoes, boy cut, vocals and all.

If you're keen on giving any of her hits a listen, you should go with 'Hang With Me'- the Avicii mix. (Love!)
Oh! And there's my fave vid of hers, 'Call your girlfriend'. Ignore the lyrics. Just watch her bust some 'European' moves...who would've thought?!

Nontokozo

CheerZ to the freaking weekend. I drink to that...Yeah Yeah!
TGIF people. Now who doesn't love Fridays???

So was heading to work this a.m and as always plugged in my phone to the car speakers for some music.
You know when you just remember a string of songs by an amazing artist and you're just craving to listen to 'em at that very minute? Toya Delazy was my craving for the day.

The normal thing to do was to search my playlist. But then...I found nothing.
Huh?
Scrolled through...still nothing.

No 'Pump it up'
No 'Losing my Love'
No 'Heart'
No 'My City'...

You must be kidding me phone! Stop playing with my emotions! *straightface*

Well, long story short I had to download all the tracks again...after a series of trials and errors as some joker thought it would be cool to post remixes on almost all the links *kmt*

Thanks to mp3tunes.org that was sorted. I owe you one guys. Well...not really.

In other words, Latoya Nontokozo Buthelezi is worth the time...and megabytes

*bobbs head to beat*
